Design and Technology at St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School

At St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School, Design and Technology (DT) is a hands-on, creative subject where children learn to design, make and improve products that solve real-life problems.

We follow the Kapow Primary scheme of work, which helps ensure children build skills step by step as they move through the school.

What children learn in DT

In DT, children develop practical skills alongside creativity and problem-solving. They learn to:

· Design purposeful products for real users

· Make items using a range of tools and materials

· Evaluate and improve their ideas

· Work safely and confidently

· Understand how design and technology impact everyday life

What does DT look like in lessons?

DT lessons are active and engaging. Children might:

· Build structures (like bridges or towers)

· Create moving toys using mechanisms

· Design and sew textiles

· Explore simple electrical systems

· Cook and prepare healthy food

Each project follows a simple process:

Design → Make → Evaluate

This helps children think like designers and engineers.

Cooking and nutrition

Cooking is an important part of our DT curriculum. Children learn:

· How to prepare simple dishes safely

· Where food comes from

· The basics of healthy eating

Skills for life

DT helps children develop important life skills, including:

· Creativity and imagination

· Problem-solving

· Resilience (learning from mistakes)

· Teamwork and communication

Progression through the school

We use a structured curriculum from Kapow Primary that builds knowledge and skills each year. Children revisit key ideas and develop greater confidence and independence over time.

Safety first

Safety is very important in DT. Children are taught how to:

Why DT matters

DT encourages children to think creatively and solve problems—skills that are valuable both in school and later in life. It also helps them understand the world around them and how things are designed and made.

Attainment targets

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study.
