Geography

At St Patrick’s, we want to inspire every child to become a curious explorer with a deep fascination for the world and its people. Our goal is for our pupils to “think like geographers”—learning not just to look at a map, but to ask big questions, observe how things change, and collect their own data. By investigating their surroundings and sharing what they find, children learn how Geography shapes lives everywhere, from our own front doors to the furthest corners of the globe.

We want our pupils to grow into resourceful, active citizens who care about the planet and feel they have the skills to help improve the world around them. To do this, we use the Kapow Primary Geography scheme, which provides our teachers with expert knowledge and exciting resources. This ensures every lesson is engaging and ambitious, making sure every child—no matter their starting point—is included and challenged to reach their full potential.

Our learning follows a “spiral” journey. This means that instead of learning a topic once and forgetting it, children revisit key themes as they grow. Each time they return to an idea, it becomes a little more complex, helping them make connections and become experts over time. This constant “looping back” is great for memory, ensures no child is left behind, and allows those who are ready for a challenge to dive even deeper into the subject.

Because every geographer works differently, our pupils show what they have learned in many ways. You might see your child’s progress through detailed maps, scientific diagrams, creative projects, or structured reports. Through this journey, we ensure that every child builds the confidence, knowledge, and skills to understand and appreciate the incredible world they live in.
